AVOCADO FOR PRESIDENT
THE AVOCADO...
Aah, the humble Avocado, loved by many yet so misunderstood… personally, I´m one of the lovers, so much so, that it´s a joy for me to dedicate an entire blog article to Avocados and sing its praises!
Despite all the Insta fashion posts about avocado toasts over the last few years, some still consider the avocado as bland, ugly, and overpriced. To be fair you´d be right if you live in northern EU, or any place far from where they grow, since every one I’ve found in supermarkets really are overpriced, underripe or wayyy too ripe, and cost you an arm and a leg…To add insult to injury dieters scorn them as too high in fat. Sad times. But having said all that, the humble Avo is the most cherished food for me, and when it comes to beautiful skin, I believe this food should be a god!
REAL LIFE TROUBLESOne of my life’s highs has been in discovering that our old house in Malaga had an Avocado tree. We lived almost a year in the house without even noticing it… It was so tall we just hadn´t looked up far enough.
Until one day I spotted them... Jackpot!!
1 DAY AVOCADO JACKPOT
Anyway, I´m not trying to show off here, I just think it´s an important point to make given that it gave me the opportunity to eat loads and loads of avocados where I usually wouldn´t have had the opportunity. So, good job that I can’t get enough of them! Here I am at risk of sounding like a hipster, but, spread on toast with a drizzle of olive oil and salt. Is actual HEAVEN.
Being an Avocado oil addict and what with being my very own guinea pig for my Alchemy Skin & Soul skincare range, I packed as many of the formulas with as many healthy doses of the oil as I could. Its silky texture and beautiful deep green colour just feels like you are literally feeding your skin with pure vitamins and sunshine…Total addict! So, eating an entire year’s harvest of Avos was a quite literally one of the best things that ever happened to me.
Avocados are really cool, great for vegans, making an excellent replacement for butter and have all kinds of uses making raw food cakes and goodies too. The oil is one of few oils pressed from the pulp as opposed to the seed or stone. It compares well with olive oil and they blend well together too. They actually have a similar monounsaturated fat profile, that helps prevent the oil from breakdown during heating, which means you can cook with it like you might Olive oil.
If the avocado pulp contains these delicious oils, I always imagine that the extracted oil is like a super concentrated Avocado… So, for skincare, if you are not into messing around with smothering raw avocado on your face, just get a really good cold pressed oil and smother yourself in that! (Personally, I like to do both).
There are so many things I love about avocados and I´d like to point out that I’m so passionate about the benefits of the Avocado because for me, it really works! Getting more Avocados in your diet and using its oil for cooking and topically has sooo many benefits for health overall and dramatically improved my skin health, texture and elasticity. It is a wonderfood for skin.
As a dry skin person, if I don’t moisturise, I end up feeling like I might be closer related to a reptile, so moisturising is like my religion. I must moisturise after every bathing session without fail. Its part of my routine, and have tried many, many different products, Avocado oil being my star!
With so many nutrients that are beneficial for the body and skin, and extreme nourishing properties due to its high concentration of anti-inflammatory oleic acid, avocado oil can be applied topically not only for daily care but also to ease skin discomfort caused by all manner of skin conditions.
Being one of the few oils that can penetrate the hair shaft, it is ideal for the hair and scalp, offering nourishment and aiding hair growth. You can apply directly with a massage, as an oil treatment/hair mask or add to your hair conditioner.
Oils don’t “hydrate” the skin they hold the moisture in, preventing water from evaporating off. There is a difference. But something about a good quality oil and the nutrients they provide, add some kind of magic and really help the suppleness and overall skin health. So, I really recommend you try it!
If you aren´t massaging your beautiful self as part of your self-care rituals, then you better get cracking! Using a base oil such as Avocado for your preferred blend of essential oils is heaven and you get the flexibility to switch it around depending on how you are feeling.
Relaxing oils such as Lavender, Chamomile, Litsea in the evenings to chill out, or a foot massage with some Mint oil.
Or Stimulate and boost circulation with some added Rosemary…The list goes on, but you get the idea!
I hope you enjoyed my love letter!
